appleOPTIONAL FIELD TRIP: Apple Orchard

Remember, this is just a suggestion.  Actually, I was taught that going on a field trip the first month of school is not a good idea for children under age four, and I've even had fours who were not ready.  It depends on the group.  For example, if you work at a school housed in a church that the children attend and they are already familiar with their surroundings (classroom, neighborhood, people, etc), it should be ok.  If everything is new to them, it may not be a good idea.

Before the trip:
Go to the orchard yourself and check out its tour for preschoolers:
*Walk the entire exact route the children will be taking.  Is it totally safe?

Ask questions:

*Are reservations needed?
*What does it cost?
*What will the children get to see/do?
*Will a snack be provided?
*Where are the bathrooms?
*How long will the tour take?
*Should boots be worn?  And so on.

Later, back at school, based on what the orchard folks told you, prepare the children for what they will be doing/seeing.

MAKE HEAD COUNTING A HABIT!!!!!!

SHARE YOUR NOTES TOO!

From Jenifer M.:
In-House Pretend Field Trip: Instead of taking our very young children to an apple orchard, we created one on our school grounds.  We placed real "fallen" apples on the ground for the children to pick up and put into strong paper bags with handles.  They took their apples home with them.
