MINI-MUSIC APPRECIATION: Folk

From Stormie:

Suggested Folk Music CD: A Children's Celebration of Folk Music, Music for Little People
: Here's a CD that you and the children can sing along with or you can use it as background music during classroom activities.  Here's just a few of the song titles:
"She'll Be Comin' 'Round the Mountain" by Pete Seeger
"World We Love" by Raffi
"There Ain't No Bugs on Me" by Jerry Garcia
"Swinging on a Star" by Maria Muldaur
" Skip to My Lou" by John McCutcheon

Or, in celebration of the letter Rr, how about introducing the children to the sounds of some classic "Rock and Roll." Here's a CD suggestion: A Child's Celebration of Rock 'n' Roll; Music for Little People
Here's just a few of the song titles:
Rock Around the Clock by Bill Haley
Charlie Brown by The Coasters
Splish Splash by Bobby Darin
Lollipop by The Chordettes
Rockin' Robin by Bobby Day
Alley Oop by Hollywood Argyles
Yakety Yak by The Coasters
Monster Mash by Bobby "Boris" Pickett

Or how about introducing children to a trumpet, trombone, tuba or tambourine for the letter Tt?

One of my very favorite folk songs to play in the classroom is the Irish tune "Jigs and Reels."  It's one of those songs that makes hands start clapping and legs start dancing.  I personally have never heard a more exciting version than that from the Jame Last Orchestra, but his CD's are next to impossible to purchase here in the U.S.  But all my teaching friends in Europe should have easy access to his work.

Woodwind Instruments: If one of your themes for the month is "air/wind," you could talk about how we use air/wind from our mouths to create music when we play "woodwind instruments" (clarinet, flute, saxophone, to name only three).

Introduce string instruments for the letter Ss.  String instruments include the violin, guitar, harp, to name only three.
