Sun Safety:
I personally like teaching
the familiar "Slip, Slop, Slap.":
Slip
on loose-fitting cotton clothes: T-shirts, long-sleeved shirts, and long pants
protect my skin from the sun's harmful rays:
Slop
on sunscreen lotion
Slap on a hat and
wear sunglasses
Activities:
Let children compare summer clothing/accessories pictures from magazines and tell you which ones would protect us from the sun.
Set up a box of oversized cotton clothing (that of older children rather than adult sizes), sunscreen lotion, and sunglasses in your dramatic play area. Have children bring their own hats from home. During Free Choice Play, allow them to take turns practicing "Slip, Slop, Slap." (You could create a picture chart showing the three steps and hang it on the wall.)
Allow children to try out various types and styles of sunglasses and really get to enjoy them.
Water Safety:
1. Never get
into the water unless a grown-up is with you or watching you. Always make
sure they see you getting into the water. Ask them first! Never never
dive or jump into shallow water. Why? (Define "shallow.")
2.
Never be in the water during lightning storms. Why?
3.
Never push others into the water. Why?
4.
Never run near the swimming pool. Why?
4.
Always wear a life jacket when on a boat. Why?
5.
If you left a toy beside the water or swimming pool, always ask an
adult to go with you to get it.
6. NEVER
GO NEAR RIVERS, LAKES, OR SWIMMING POOLS BY YOURSELF!
Activities:
Allow children to practice putting on life jackets in your dramatic play area.

(I'm Safe) In the Water, by Wendy Gordon; illustrated by Paul Gordon: Kip
and Kayla are taking swimming lessons but Kayla is afraid to get into the pool.
This is a delightful little book that teaches water safety to young children.
