Throughout the month, as opportunities present themselves, reflect back upon
the school year with the children: *During
story time, hold up a book you read earlier in the year and ask children if they
can remember what it was about. Better yet, ask the children to choose a
book "from the past year." *Set
up a particular art project that was done earlier in the year. See
if children can remember what they did. Better yet, ask the children
to think of an art project from the year that they would like to do again.
*At Group Time, ask the children if they
can remember all the places you went this year (field trips). Reminisce
aloud. *Ask the children to "think
of a game we played this year that would be fun to play again." *Begin
singing particular songs that were sung and see if the children remember them. Better
yet, ask them to think of a song from the year. *Begin
particular fingerplays and see if the children remember them.
*Repeat a particular food project and see
if children can remember any of the ingredients. *Put
out a particular game requiring rules and see if children can remember how to
play it.
All of the above are not only "History,"
the act of remembering exercises memory skills.
Other
Options: * As it relates to summer themes (and history), another thing
you could do is provide pictures/posters/books showing bathing suits of old.
*As it relates to Mother's Day (and history), have
moms send their baby pictures to school for their child to "show-n-tell." ----------------
