Maintaining my webpages has now become a part-time career for me, and the cost of site maintenance has steadily risen over time. So, if you benefit from this website and would like to see it continue, please purchase "Stormie's Stuff for Teachers," and/or make occasional financial donations where possible to help defer the costs of keeping my site on the internet.
My
very favorite large muscle activities have been reserved for my "GROSS
MOTOR" booklet (see the "Stormie's
Stuff for Teachers" section of my website).
GROSS
MOTOR FOCUS:
Skip;
Review Of All Basic Movements; Summer Sports
Skip
Lecture Notes and Random Activities:
*Skipping
is the combination of a walk and a hop.
*The
difference between a skip and a gallop:
To skip,
you step on one foot and hop in place on the same foot, then you step on the other
foot and hop in place. As you alternate back and forth between the left
and the right, you are then skipping.
To gallop,
you take a step with one foot bringing the other foot up behind it, then you shift
your weight to the back foot. The foot that led then leads again and the
moves are repeated.
*Can
you skip with your eyes closed? (Make
sure the child's pathway is safe.)
*Can
you skip and count to 10
*Have
children skip on the shape of a giant Z on the sidewalk.
Review Of All Basic Movements
*How about reviewing more than one concept
at the same time? For example:
1.
Combine the review of shapes with the review of "Jumping"
or "Hopping" (as in "jump" on all the rectangles
and triangles, or "hop" over all the circles and squares).
Use a different movement and different shapes on another May day.
2.
Combine the review of numbers with the review of "Bouncing a ball"
(as in "bounce" the ball 5 times, then increase the number on
another May day).
3. Combine the review of letters
with the review of basic movements (example: Print letters on the sidewalk with
chalk and have a child walk around the Zz's, or run across the Rr's).
*Review by repeating large muscle games
and activities you've done all year since way back in September
*Review
by creating obstacle courses which involve movements you've focused on all year
*Review by combining movement with various
types of music (as in galloping or kicking to various rhythms)
....................and
so on
Summer
Sports:
Just as with fall and winter,
there are sports that are unique to the season of summer that we can focus on
in our classrooms:
Baseball, Golf, Water Skiing, Outdoor Swimming, Hiking,
Roller Skating, Cycling, Tennis, and so on
Note: Even though preschoolers are too young to actually participate in some of the sports, we can still expose them to the various fun ways to "stay healthy."
Topics
of discussion/demonstration might include:
*Type
of clothing that is worn
*Equipment
that is used
*Parts
of the body that are used
*Safety
rules for various sports
Here's a "Thought Question"
for the end of your "Summer Sports" unit: Which summer sport do you
like best? Why?
Please
share your ideas too. E-mail me at stormie@preschoolbystormie.com
