MINI-ENVIRONMENTAL ED: Beautiful Beaches and/or Deserts

Beautiful Beaches:
Note from Stormie: Environmental Education activities will be included in my "Stormie's Activity Cards."  If you would like to begin collecting all my classroom ideas (each on a 4 x 6" index card), click here to check them out.

Beautiful Deserts:

I want to thank Becky Barlow from Longview, Texas for kicking off this section of my website with a wonderful idea to enhance a "desert" theme in the classroom:
Classroom Wall/Bulletin Board Cactus: Draw different varieties of cactus shapes on green foam sheets.  Also cut out red and yellow foam flowers and hot-glue them to the cactus shapes.  For the "prickly" part of a cactus, poke holes into the foam shapes (I used a thumbtack).  Then cut lots of heavy fishing line into 6" pieces and insert them into the holes.  Turn the cactus shapes over and tape the fishing line down to hold them securely in place (I used duct tape).

From Stormie:
Science Corner: Provide picture books of various types of desert cacti.
Group Time: Through pictures, introduce the giant beautiful Saguaro cactus and/or America's Saguaro National Park in Arizona.
In-House Field Trip: See if you can get someone from a nursery to bring various cactus plants for children to see and touch.

This ends "MAY" themes and activities for now but many more are coming.  Please understand that maintaining my webpages has now become a part-time career for me, and the cost of site maintenance has steadily risen over time.  So, if you benefit from this website and would like to see it continue, please purchase "Stormie's Stuff for Teachers," and/or make occasional financial donations where possible to help defer the costs of keeping my site on the internet.
