My very favorite preschool math activities
have been reserved for my "PRE-MATH"
booklet (see the "Stormie's Stuff for Teachers" section
of my website).
NUMBER: 6
From Stormie:
Math Learning Center Activity: Classification: Sorting:
Place six of each of the following objects in a box: paper clips, buttons,
beads, cotton balls, beans, and macaroni. Children sort the objects
by placing one type of object in each of the cups of a six-cup muffin pan.
Remind the children to count the objects in each cup before leaving the learning
center and to dump all the objects back into the box and mix them up so that the
game is ready for the next person who comes along.6 Items/3 Pairs:
Discuss and demonstrate a "pair" then provide various items in separate groups
(6 mittens, 6 gloves, 6 socks, 6 shoes, 6 boots, etc). Ask children to team
up and go to one of the groups of items and see how many "pairs" they can find
among all the items.
**Snowflakes:
Create paper snowflakes, some with 6 points, some with more and some with less
than 6 points. Children sort the 6-pointed 'flakes out from the rest --
they will have to count the points on the snowflakes. Mark a large dot on
one point of each snowflake as a starting point for counting so that children
will know that when they come back to that dot, they have counted all the points
of the 'flake. Some children may need assistance.
Pre-Math:
Use 6 Balls of Snow: Provide white paper circles in various sizes. Instruct
children to create a snowman using six snowballs. (This will require the
skill of counting.)
Stormie's Games: By the way, I offer a "Counting
Cards" game in the "Teaching Aids" section of "Stormie's
Stuff for Teachers.
Share your ideas
too. E-mail me at stormie@preschoolbystormie.com
Here's a great reminder
from David: Dice and Dominoes are great activities
for counting to six. From
Maggie:
We use 6-cup egg boxes for sorting out
a variety of objects.......shells, etc.
