CHARACTER
EDUCATION: Being Helpful
By
the way, the character trait of "being helpful" fits so perfectly with
a "Community Helpers" theme.
Group
Time discussions might include:
*Have
children name things they can do to help someone.
*Remind
children that they have classroom helpers every day (review your classroom helper
chart).
*How could you help someone
on the playground?
*How could you help
someone in the Art Center?
*How can
you help mommy/daddy/baby sister at home?
Give
examples of real life situations and have children tell what could be done to
help:
*Alice spilled her juice at
snack time and it dripped onto the floor and onto her chair.
*Billy
was cutting with scissors when the teacher said it was clean-up time. Billy
was trying to hurry but his papers were all over the floor and table.
*Mrs.
Grimes dropped her pencil when she walked into the classroom.
*Andy
was trying to get the tricycle out of the building but the building door kept
hitting the tricycle.
*Cindy was putting
her puzzle away when, all of a sudden, she dropped it and all the pieces fell
out.
*Johnny couldn't find one of his
gloves.
*.......And so on...........
Having
children create a mural of magazine pictures showing people (especially children)
"being helpful" is a great way to reinforce this concept.
