MINI-MUSIC
APPRECIATION: Vocal
On a preschooler level of understanding, vocal music
could be called (or defined as) "music made with our voices" or "singing."
I like Choral Music as a vocal focus, but you could also introduce Opera, and
I'm sure there are other forms of Vocal Music that just aren't familiar to me.
I know that I have several music specialist friends who are frequent visitors
to my website, so if any of you would like to make suggestions, I would be honored
to post your ideas below.
One of my very favorite artists
for choral music with young children is Ella Jenkins
-- especially this CD:
You'll Sing A Song and I'll
Sing A Song
Even though her records and tapes have been around
for a long time, they are as perfect for today as they were years ago.
You
could also play a CD from the Vienna Boy's Choir:
Beautiful
Vienna, by Boys Choir of the Vienna Woods
For Opera, here's a suggested
CD: The Classical Child at the Opera, Metromusic
Music Appreciation/Language: Here's a fun activity: Record children singing a familiar song. Record them singing the same song a second time but with a musical instrument as accompaniment (piano, etc). Play the tape back to the children later and have them tell you which version they like best. If you have access to more than one musical instrument (as well as someone who can play them), sing the song with several different instruments.
Sound Discrimination:
Play the sounds of adult choirs versus children's choirs for the class and
then ask, "Can you tell me who is singing?" "Are they grown-ups
or children?"
In-House Field Trip: How about going Christmas caroling to the school front offices to celebrate the music of "voices?" Sing familiar children's songs like Jingle Bells, Rudolph, We Wish You a Merry Christmas, and oh, don't forget Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star.
