I have reserved my very favorite large muscle
activities for my "GROSS MOTOR"
booklet (see the "Stormie's Stuff for Teachers" section
of my website).
GROSS
MOTOR: Hop
From
Stormie:
Lecture Notes and
Random Activities:
*Hopping
can be done in place or while moving but always involves only one leg.
(Jumping involves both feet.)
*How
many times have you (and I'm just as guilty) had children
"hop like a bunny" but they were actually jumping? I have been trying (but
often I forget) to get over that bad habit and change this to "Can you
show me how a bunny would jump?" (Two feet) "Now, can you show me
how a bunny would hop?" (One foot).
*Can
you hop sideways?
*Can you hop from side to side?
*Can you hop while holding
the other foot in your hand?
New Fun With Old Rhymes:
ONCE
I SAW A LITTLE BIRD Once I
saw a little bird come hop, hop, hop; So
I cried, "Little Bird, will you stop, stop, stop?" I
was going to the window to say, "How do you do?" But
he shook his little tail, and far away he flew. You
can use this rhyme for creative drama as well as gross motor. I would probably
do it outdoors. While the children are playing, call one (or more) at a
time to come play the game with you. After reading the poem to them, have
them go through the motions as you read the words. They could start out
hopping, stopping when the words tell them to. Then, at the end, they can
pretend to "shake their little tails and fly away." Children must also "listen"
during this activity (a language skill).

your ideas too. E-mail me at stormie@preschoolbystormie.com
