Water
Color Painting On Ovals: To add a little variety to the month,
it's fun to give children the option of taking their big oval papers and painting
them at a table using sets of water color paints. (Personally, I like
white shiny paper for water colors.) Water color paint sets give children
the experience of going through a routine of steps (wet the brush, swab the brush,
pick up a paint with the brush, rinse the brush before a new color, etc). Water
color painting is also good because it requires children to use a tighter grasp
than with easel brushes.
Creating
Pastels: The definition of a pastel color is "color with a soft
subdued shade." So that children can create and discover pastels,
we can provide them with any bright color of paint and white paint. They
can mix the white and the color together to create a pastel.
Abstract Paintings: I like providing large
easel-sized oval shapes for painting at the easel during April (if "Oval"
is the shape we're learning). I might provide green and white paints at
the easel one day, blue and white the next day -- whatever the colors of the month
may be + white so that a pastel can be created. When the "oval"
paintings have dried, the children can take them home as they are or take them
to the Art Center for further artwork of their choosing, or you could ask them
if they would like their large oval paintings cut into an April-related shape
(giant tulip, bird, raindrop, or bunny, for example) (going from abstract to concrete).
Variation: Instead of creating pastels, put out various earthy/spring
colors of paints.
